The Hazards of the Poker Ego

There are a lot of things that one must learn to play winning Poker, but one of the most significant that any player must strive to achieve is to ascertain that the ego never develops. Simply put, having an ego can be harmful to your game.

It should be stressed that there is a big difference between having an ego and self confidence. The latter is about believing in your Poker strategy and tactics. Having confidence in your ability to play and win the game is crucial for any type of game, be it cash games, tourneys or heads up.

A confident player will be able to think more clearly, and make wiser decisions. This will also show in his persona on the table, which will have a positive effect for him and cause the other players to be wary.

But having confidence in your Poker skills is different from having an ego. This is evident from those players who think that they know everything there is to know about the game. Sometimes this attitude is just something they bring to the table, whether they have a lot of experience or not. However, for the most part, this is engendered by a few big pot wins, bolstering an already sizeable ego.

This type of attitude is something that you will see in land based card rooms, but most especially in online Poker, where a lot of players will not only boast about winning but often talk about how you should play this or that hand.

This kind of thinking is what will bring about the downfall of any Poker player. The fact is that the game is so complex and continuously changing, that no one will be able to completely master it. The moment that you think that you have done so, you will just be setting yourself up for a fall.

The winning Poker player is able to prevail on a consistent basis because he knows that he does not know it all, and therefore is always striving to improve on the aspects that he is weak at. You should do the same. Even when you are on a winning streak, never make the assumption that you are now the master of the game.

As stated, no one person will ever be able to completely dominate Poker, but by continuously working on your game and not giving in to your ego, you will be a consistent winner.
