Winning in Different Texas Holdem Limits

Every Texas Holdem strategy guide will tell you that moving up from limit to limit is the key to making money in the game. That's true, but how exactly do you make the adjustment, and what changes do you need to make to your game?

When it comes to Texas Holdem limits, there are other differences beside the bankroll: the other distinction is the playing style of the players, and yours as well. Almost all the players in the 50 cent to $1 level are extremely aggressive and will play with any type of hand, so to win here you need to be tight aggressive. Play with a select number of hands, and then when you get them, bet all out, as you will get called.

Using this Texas Holdem strategy will allow you to win a lot of games, but of course to make more money you'll need to move to higher limits like $2/$4 or $3/$6. The Texas Holdem strategy here should be somewhat opposite of the one you use in the lower limit game. Because most of your opponents will be tight, take advantage of this opportunity to play looser and take down more hands.

In $3/$6 games, be prepared to make a bet when a scare card comes on the board (such as an Ace). Whether you have an Ace in hand is not as important as making your opponents think you do. In case you run into some calling stations, make a raise when you do get the nuts.

Bankroll management in Texas Holdem varies from player to player but a good rule of thumb is to bring about twice the big blind, so in a $2/$4 game that would be $800. Some players will bring more, and that's okay; after all you should always have some cash handy when you get on that winning run, or need to supplement your bankroll in case you run bad.

One final advice: Texas Holdem, whatever limit it may be, will be marked by the occasional downswings. To avoid looking at the game in the short term, always remind yourself that your playing career is like one very long session. Doing so will allow you to look at things in their proper perspective.

Once you've mastered the basic playing styles needed to win in a particular Texas Holdem limit, there'll be no restrictions as to how far up the stakes game you can go after. All it takes is dedication to the game.
